Perry has the father of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback) her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. Fearing stress, her parents didn't want to see her pursue acting before she reached the age of 18. Perry said she felt timid to perform at the age of 16, but she began performing in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry had the opportunity to secure small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. Homesickness, however, caused her to move back to California again where she began to work in the stage. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. In 2015, she performed with her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. She had a regular role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal, starring her dad. She played the role of an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close familial connection to the character.
